Moving to (or in) Austin, Texas soon? If so, then you really need to check out the Bellhops Austin-specific moving checklist (we’re movers in Austin, if you haven’t figured out). Sure you need to make sure you’ve got all your essentials in order (and we’ve got a standard moving checklist for that). But Austin isn’t just any ol’ town. So here’s a collection of ten things you can’t forget when moving to Austin:
1. Longhorns Foam Hook ‘Em Hand:
That’s right. You can’t move to Austin without your Longhorns foam hand. Founded in 1893, the University of Texas Longhorns football program has been one of the most highly regarded and successful programs of all time. In 2008, ESPN ranked Texas as the seventh-most prestigious college football program since 1936. Represent.
2. SXSW Calendar:
A calendar is great, but you definitely need to make sure you’ve got your SXSW (South by Southwest) calendar handy. From concerts and world class keynote speeches to film screenings and exhibitions, SXSW is a March mainstay in Austin that you don’t want to miss.
3. Get Some Grub:
After moving to this exciting city, make sure you take time to explore the incredible food scene that Austin has to offer. Not to mention, you’ll probably be hungry after the big move. Plan out your culinary adventures starting with our blog post, the “Best Food Austin, Texas Has to Offer” blog post.
Don’t forget to pack boots that are made for walkin’ (or dancing). Strut your stuff around downtown Austin and feel like a local in some cowboy boots. You won’t regret it.
5. Koozie Collection:
Austin is known for all things outdoors, especially sporting events and music festivals. That said, one key item that every Austinite needs is a Koozie. Word to the wise: don’t pick the koozie, let the koozie pick you. #DeepThoughts
6. Austin City Limits:
You’ve probably seen the series on television (thanks, PBS!), but now you’ll have the chance to see Austin City Limits live. They even have power-packed weekend festival now. This live show helped Austin to become widely known as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” and is the only television show to receive the National Medal of Arts. Buy a stack of sticky notes, write “Get Austin City Limits Tickets” on every note, and post them all over your new home until that mission is accomplished.
7. BBQ sauce:
Don’t forget to pack gallons of BBQ sauce. It goes with everything in Austin, TX. (But don’t worry if you forget the sauce. They’ve got plenty there already.)
8. Celebrity Bingo:
Did you know that celebrities galore hail from Austin? Yep. True story. The list includes Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Willie Nelson and Owen Wilson just to name a few. That’s right, you’re moving to a place where celebrities are born.
9. Movies After Your Move:
Now that you know about the celebrities, how about the movies that were filmed in Austin? It’s an impressive collection, for sure. True Grit, Dazed and Confused, Office Space and Kill Bill: Vol. 1 are just a few of the amazing movies that were made on Austin soil. Time to pop some popcorn and watch some Texas-style Hollywood action.
10. Bring Your Swim Trunks:
Care for a dip? Barton Springs Pool is the cool place to be on those hot Austin days. Being a recreational outdoor swimming pool that is filled entirely with water from nearby natural springs, one can enjoy a dip in the pool and a nice nap in the warm sun.
So there you are, a moving checklist any new Austinite needs…and one a veteran Austinite might find handy.
