The company that considers itself the ‘Uber of moving’ is growing in the Queen City. By Hilary Burns

Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Bellhops contracts college students for on-demand moving jobs. The company pays the students $13 to $15 an hour and students can select jobs on the company’s app — similar to how Uber drivers pick up rides when they have time.

Bellhops was founded in 2013 by Cameron Doody and Stephen Vlahos. They company now has more than 100 full-time employees in its Chattanooga headquarters and over 5,000 college students on the platform across the country. Bellhops currently has about 130 students from UNC Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College on the platform.

David Martin, Bellhops’ communications and partnerships director, told me Charlotte is one of the company’s top-10 markets. In 2015, Bellhops completed 664 moves in Charlotte, up from 301 in 2014. The company also saw strong growth in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Wilmington last year.

“We have been in Charlotte now for two years; we are starting our third, and the growth across the board has been pretty good,” Martin said. “We saw great growth in 2015, which is attributed to organic growth and some investment dollars helped drive that growth.”

Bellhops closed a $13.5 million investment of Series B funding at the end of 2015. Canaan Partners led the round that also included Lowercase Capital, Bullet Time Capital and Binary Capital, The Wall Street Journal reported.

“We are looking to inject that cash and grow that market presence as well,” Martin said.

Martin said Bellhops is different from competitors like College Hunks Hauling Junk, which operates as a franchise model.

He also said all Bellhops go through a background check and moving jobs posted on the platform are vetted through the company’s internal team. Most jobs require two Bellhops — a “captain and a wingman,” Martin says. The captain takes on more responsibility for the job and is paid $15 an hour and the wingman is paid $13 an hour.
