A Little About Atlanta Neighborhoods
Atlanta lays claim to the ninth-largest metro area in the country, with about 6 million people living in the greater region. The city forms the core of a broader area including adjacent metro areas like Athens, Clarke, and Sandy Springs, and is filled with over 200 neighborhoods. And with a great music scene, professional sports teams, local food, craft beer, and a thriving nightlife, Atlanta’s population is projected to grow at an exorbitant rate.
Old Fourth Ward
Old Fourth Ward is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Atlanta. But it has been completely restored in the last ten years, and with direct access to the Beltline, it’s one of the most sought after areas for businesses and visitors.
What’s Happening in Old Fourth Ward
Old Fourth Ward is extremely dog-friendly and walkable. A stroll down its streets will introduce you to your strolling neighbors and the neighborhood’s many new places to eat and drink. Ponce City Market, for example, is one of the best markets in the city. Visitors frequently get lost walking through its stores and roaming the rooftop entertainment space, Skyline Park.
Many of the neighborhood’s shops are located directly on the Beltline, making it a popular stop for those looking to spend the afternoon shopping and getting their steps in all at once. Or you can rent a Bird scooter and travel the Beltline’s length, getting your shopping done in a flash.
For the best view of the Atlanta skyline, check out the rooftop bar at New Realm Brewing. This brewery on the Beltline was founded by the former head brewmaster of Stone Brewing, Mitch Steele, and its beers show off Steele’s vast experience and knowledge in the field. And for some of the best grub, check out Staplehouse and sample its inventive, fresh, and high-end cuisine.

Houses in Old Fourth Ward can be found at very affordable prices. But if you’re looking for a luxury condo or fancy mansion, you won’t have to look far. Homes in Old Fourth Ward sold for a median price of $415,000 in January, 2023.
Little Five Points
Little Five Points is the most eclectic of Atlanta neighborhoods and has some of the oldest bars and clubs in the city. Aptly named for its iconic intersection, Little Five Points is a mini-melting pot of its own. Walking its streets is like walking around the world, and the neighborhood draws a diverse crowd full of cultural richness.
What’s Happening in Little Five Points
This neighborhood is home to one of the top beer bars in America, The Porter, as well as the record store that created Record Store Day, Criminal Records. Residences weave through the neighborhood, so Little Five Points is shared between homes, restaurants, venues, clubs, and shops.
The area values creativity and originality, and its mural-covered, street-art-speckled buildings display this neighborhood theme. Be sure to check out its music scene as well: Variety Playhouse is a great place to catch a show sipping on some coffee or craft cocktails.

Many locals love Little Five Points because their homes aren’t segregated off from the happenings. Instead, residents walk out their front door and step across the street to their favorite coffee shop or lunch stop. The median value of homes in Little Five Points is $590,000
Inman Park
This hub is an extension of Old Fourth Ward and Little Five Points and is nestled just south of the two. This residential suburb is known for its beautiful homes with large lots. And it’s convenient to get anywhere from Inman Park, so many of its residents travel by bike, scooter, or on foot.
What’s Happening in Inman Park
Inman Park is surrounded by all the perks of Atlanta, including the Beltline, city parks, bars, and tons of coffee shops. Some of Atlanta’s most popular restaurants are in Inman Park: Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall, Parish, Barcelona Wine Bar, and countless others.
Krog Street Market is one of the hottest spots in the area, where visitors can grab a beer at Hop City, peruse the shops, and buy a bite of local grub. The neighborhood has a quirky side too, with a number of experimental restaurants. Giving Parker’s on Ponce a visit should be on any resident’s or visitor’s list. This classy steakhouse throws in a number of surprises, like their grilled octopus or their maple miso sweet potatoes.

Schools in this neighborhood include Inman Park Cooperative Preschool, Samuel M. Inman Middle School, and The Little Middle School among others.
Homes in Inman Park
Inman Park’s signature Victorian-style homes line many of the neighborhood’s winding streets. Many of the houses sit elegantly on larger lots, giving this neighborhood a homey feel that doesn’t quite mimic the rest of the urban city. Inman Park’s median home sale price was $655,000 in January, 2023.
Midtown
There would probably be a riot if we left Midtown off of this list. Midtown is the part of the city that comes to anyone’s mind who’s visited Atlanta. Located smack in the city center (hence the name), the area is a hot-spot when it comes to restaurants, bars, and entertainment. It’s home to a very young crowd too, since Georgia Tech and Savannah College of Art & Design are both located in the neighborhood.
What’s Happening in Midtown
Nearly every Atlanta amenity can be found here in Midtown. Although it emits a very corporate vibe in some areas, Midtown holds most of Atlanta’s most famous attractions: Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Fox Theater, High Museum of Art, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and many others.
Midtown is landmarked by many recognizable skyscrapers, giving the area it’s inner-city feel. But it also offers relief for its residents who long for the outdoors, featuring green spaces and outdoor events like Piedmont Park and Music Midtown. With numerous parks and walking areas, Midtown is in the running for the most dog-friendly area in the city. And with its extremely walkable streets, accessing all the corners of this section of the city is a breeze.

Virginia-Highland
Located about 3 miles east of downtown, Virginia-Highland is one of Atlanta’s most expensive neighborhoods. And for good reason. The neighborhood has a perfect blend of dining, arts, and nightlife. And behind all of the action are quiet neighborhood streets and local schools. This perk brings in a number of families but the neighborhood also draws quite a few younger residents as well, who are willing to dish out some cash for its awesome amenities.
What’s Happening in Virginia-Highland
Lying on North Highland Avenue, Virginia-Highland has a spot-on layout. Bar-hopping and visiting new shops and restaurants is as easy as walking down this main drag. Its long stretch is packed full of tasty restaurants that serve creative drinks and unique cuisines, and if you take the avenue far enough, you’ll eventually hit the Beltline. But you’ll doubtfully make it that far without a full stomach.
