Moving to a new state is a lot like jumping off the high dive. It’s a little bit terrifying at first, but it’s also exhilarating.
And like jumping off the high dive, it is something everyone should experience, at least once in their lives. However, to build up the confidence to do so, sometimes you need a few words of encouragement.
That’s exactly what your friends here at Bellhops are going to do for you today. We have a huge team (many of whom have lived all over the United States), and we have moved thousands of people, just like you, all over the country.
Keep reading, and we can help you make sure your big move is an exhilarating success.
Are you ready? Good. We’ll walk you through everything you will need to know and do as you get started on this exciting adventure.
Hiring movers for your long-distance move shouldn’t be a luxury. That’s why we offer customizable, professional moving services so that you only pay for what you need.
First thing’s first, before you move to another state, you should probably have a job in the state you are moving to. Or, at the very least, know how you are going to get a job once you are there. We see quite a few young people get adventurous and make a jump to another state, without having taken the time to properly plan out the move.
If you don’t remember anything else from this article, please remember this: You need to know how you are going to put bread on the table before moving to another table.
Now, there are a number of ways you can go about doing this, but below you will find some really great sites to start your job search on:
AngelList – this is the go-to site for individuals interested in landing a job with a startup. With over 22,000 listings, you won’t have any trouble finding a job in the state you are moving to. But, keep in mind, the highest concentration of startups jobs are in cities like San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. And, while startups can provide great opportunities and plenty of room for growth, remember that there is some risk that comes along with them — after all, they are just getting their start.
ZipRecruiter — this is a great site for individuals looking for quantity over quality. ZipRecruiter allows you to submit your resume to hundreds of companies very quickly, without the hassle of long application forms. It’s a great way to get a job, but not necessarily get your dream job, if that makes sense.
LinkedIn Premium — have you considered upgrading your LinkedIn account to premium? If you haven’t done this yet, it is free for your first month. If you are moving to a new city and want to network and potentially land a job somewhere, this would be a great investment. If you like it enough to become a premium member for a few months as you find a job, you should expect to pay $60 a month — a rather inexpensive investment, considering it could help you land a $50,000 salary somewhere.
And, speaking of salary, money is a factor in everything we do. If you are going to be moving to a new state, the cost is something that should definitely be considered.
A question that everyone has when they are considering moving to a new state is how much will it cost? And more times than not, this one question is what scares people away from making one of the most exciting and fulfilling decisions of their lives — to take the plunge and move.
Well, as we said earlier, Bellhops has a ton of experience moving people just like you all over the country and we know a thing or two about the cost of relocating. From our years of experience, we can tell you this:
Moving can always be done for cheaper than you think, but you should always set aside 10% more than you think you are going to spend during your big move.
With that said, if you are interested in getting a better idea of how much it will cost for your big move, you are welcome to get a free estimate from us here at Bellhops. We have created our business around the idea of offering breezy low-stress moving services at a reasonable price.
Now, in addition to moving costs, you should also consider having 3-6 months of living expenses saved up (especially if you are moving without already having a job lined up).
So, if your rent is going to cost you $500 a month and your living expenses another $750 a month, you will want to save between $3,750 – $7,500 before making your big move.
Before we part ways, for the time being, we wanted to leave you with a few states to consider moving to.
This is perhaps the biggest question of the day and for good reason — where you live has a large impact on your success, wallet, and overall happiness. While places like San Francisco, CA are awesome, the average rent for a 2-bedroom apartment is… go ahead, take your best guess…
$4,000+ a month. That is a lot of money, folks. A lot of money.
So, when you are making the decision to move to another state, you should not only consider the quality of living… but also the price of living. Below you will find 10 cities/states that have a reasonable cost of living, along with a ton of opportunity and entertainment:
With that said, if you have your heart set on a specific city, by all means, go and make it happen. Just be sure that you are saving a little more money upfront before making the jump. It’s also worth timing your move correctly, so be sure to consider the best time of year to move.
We will leave you with one final piece of advice. One of our favorite quotes about moving comes from the book The Arabian Nights. In that book, Tahir Shah writes something rather compelling:
“Settling into a new country is like getting used to a new pair of shoes. At first, they pinch a little, but you like the way they look, so you carry on. The longer you have them, the more comfortable they become. Until one day without realizing it you reach a glorious plateau. Wearing those shoes is like wearing no shoes at all. The more scuffed they get, the more you love them and the more you can’t imagine life without them.”
Moving to a new state can be scary, not unlike jumping off the diving board for the first time, but once you are all settled in, you sure will be glad you made the jump.
